Inside every Aldi store is a single aisle of merchandise that mostly has nothing to do with groceries. The Wednesday rush can often be pinned on die-hard Aldi shoppers, 3 million of whom are members of the very active Aldi Aisle of Shame Facebook page and frequently post about their latest aisle of shame hauls. They know it’s Aldi,” Pratt said. The German Supermarket acquired Winn-Dixie, Harveys Supermarkets and other grocery stores in the Southeast in an attempt to increase its presence in the region. That’s where this aisle of shame fits in and helps Aldi offer its low prices overall.”

Why it matters: “For most of the last two decades, China’s economic growth has been a major driver of the global economy,” said Alex Etra, a strategist at data analytics firm Exante. That means that if China’s economy slows down, global economic growth slows down. ExxonMobil (XOM) may not be doing too much business with China, said Etra, but if Chinese growth slows, that means oil prices go down. Earlier this year, Bank of America compiled a list of the S&P 500 companies with the highest exposure to China. The grand total of all the private wealth in the world fell 2.4% to $454.4 trillion last year, according to the annual Credit Suisse and UBS global wealth report.

New York CNN —Grocery shoppers in the Southeast can expect to see more Aldi stores starting 2024. Some of the nearly 400 Winn-Dixie locations Aldi is acquiring will keep the familiar red-and-white Winn-Dixie branding and traditional store layout, but many will convert to Aldi’s brand and bare-bones store format. The acquisition – which includes Harveys Supermarket – will add locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi to Aldi’s portfolio. Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket had long been staples in the Southeast region. Aldi has not disclosed how many of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores it plans on converting, or how much the deal cost.

German supermarket Penny raised prices on meats and cheeses to reflect their "true cost" last week. By contrast, one brand of vegan schnitzel only rose 5%, suggesting some vegan products have minimal long-term environmental and health costs. Despite Germany's recent drop in inflation, food prices still remain 11% higher this month compared to 12 months ago. The company temporarily hiked some prices to comment on how food prices are not fully indicative of broader long-term environmental and health costs. "We know that many of our customers are suffering from today's unrelentingly high food prices," Stefan Görgens, the COO at Penny, said in a statement.

But their cheap food, often produced on an industrial scale, has a high environmental price. German agriculture was responsible for 55.5 million metric tonnes of greenhouse emissions last year, roughly 7.4% of the country's emissions. During the "true cost" campaign, which runs until Saturday, customers at Penny's 2,150 branches, will be charged a price for nine products, from yoghurt to sausages and vegan schnitzel, that includes climate, health, soil and water costs. According to figures provided by Penny, organic products had environmental costs of an average of 1.15 euros, while non-organic products that relied on chemicals had an average environmental cost of 1.57 euros. It is unclear, however, whether consumers are prepared to pay more to reduce their environmental impact.

London CNN —A measure of UK grocery price inflation soared to a record high this month — that’s more bad news for consumers already facing a shortage of fruit and vegetables that has led to rationing at major supermarkets. “Our latest research shows that grocery price inflation is the second most important financial issue for the public behind energy costs, with two-thirds of people concerned by food and drink prices,” McKevitt said. Mark Spencer, the UK food and farming minister, held crisis talks with supermarket bosses on Monday to discuss their response to the shortages. UK growers were not harvesting tomatoes, peppers and eggplants at this time of year, as is usually the case, because high energy costs this winter had delayed planting, said Lee Stiles, LGVA secretary. UK apple farmers normally buy at least one million apple trees each winter for planting.

It had already beaten revenue records for the tournament, and succeeded in bringing more than 20 new advertisers on board.
